Mixing the intimacy of acoustic, the firebrand electricity of modern rock, and the singer songwriting lyrics of folk. A mid twenties songwriter, performing originals and covers both old and new.
My name is Tim Brooks, I'm a singer songwriter from Hitchin, originally Witney via Southampton. Here's a little bit of background forya.
At a church run summer camp many many years ago (2002, which now qualifies as many years ago!), I bizarrely got inducted into rock and roll. After asking the token kid with the black puffy hoody what those bands were on the front of his CDs (Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, Linkin Park, this was 2002 remember!), I was introduced into another world.
On returning home, I remember getting a copy of a Kerrang! compilation album called Kerrang! Recharged, on wh ... ich were, much to my delight, all of the aforementioned artists (as well as a really ropey Kelly Osbourne track!), and after consistent pestering of my parents to get the album, I finally had it in my early 2000s walkman.
There's something gloriously naïve about going into rock music knowing nothing.
These were years of discovery. I can almost feel grey hairs growing as I say this, but before the days of Youtube, Spotify et al, music discovery was a word of mouth thing, CDs bought, borrowed and burnt.
Around about the mid 00s, I started to get involved with the “emo” scene. I say get involved, my look was almost a parody of the generic emo look, black hair, lip ring, tattoos. All of this probably just to try and feel a sense of inclusion. Trying to fit into a culture that was primarily targeted at people who didn't fit in. Yeah...
The music though.
That era churned out some truly terrible acts, all whiny vocals, breathy screams, songs about your ex, but when it got it right....
I was at a concert in London recently where The Used played their first record (probably a staple from the emo back catalogue), in full. The audience was a ragtag mix of 20 somethings, for whom that album meant something. For anyone growing up through adolescence around about that time, those albums are a symbol of growing up, and whilst many will look back with scorn now (The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance gets a huge amount of this!), there is no doubting that some of these records will hold nostalgic immunity to a whole group of people.
Going through university, my music taste certainly broadened. I become more and more infatuated with individual songwriters such as Frank Turner and Bruce Springsteen, as well as bands such as The Gaslight Anthem and Counting Crows. Bands that were able to convey their passion and emotion on stage, but without a floppy black fringe in sight!
Eventually, after graduating, I did what every graduate does. Spam applied for a job, and got one.
However fast forward a few years, and I found myself in a position where I was unhappy with where I was, the life choices I'd made, and where I had ended up. It almost felt like this was it, the roller coaster ride of the early 20s had ended, and this was the long haul.
This confusion pretty much shunted me into songwriting, almost as a bizarre antidote to everything that was going on around me, and in fact many of the songs on my first EP are born from this period of time.
As we speak, the EP is in progress. I like to think of it as a mix of acoustic rock, but with the pop rocky roots of what I listened to when I was growing up.
If you've got this far, congratulations!! Check out my news feed for regular updates and gigging details, and once again, thanks for the support!
