Artur Mendes

Biography

Artur Mendes was born in Figueira da Foz – Portugal – in 1986.
He started his musical studies with António Jesus and, posteriorly studied Saxophone at David Sousa Music Conservatory with José Firme, at Espinho Professional Music School with Francisco Ferreira (Orchestral Practice Course) and at Lisbon Superior Music School with José Massarrão (Bacherols Degree, Master in Music and Master in Music Teaching).
He has participated in courses with Arno Bornkamp (Netherlands), Claude Delangle (France), Jean-Yves Fourmeau (France), Jean-Marie Londeix (France), Vincent David (France), Mari ... o Marzi (Italy), Christian Lauba (France), Richard Ducros (France), James Houlik (USA), Fernando Ramos (Portugal), Stéphane Laporte (France), Henk van Twillert (Netherlands), Gilberto Bernardes (Portugal), João Figueiredo (Portugal), Alfonso Padilla (Spain), Kenneth Tse (Hong Kong), Carlos Gontijo (Brasil), Jérôme Laran (France), Antonio Felipe Belijar (Spain), among others.
In 2008 he was admitted at the National Republican Guard Symphonic Band – Portugal.
He has played with several orchestras like, Portuguese Symphonic Band, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Wasbe Wind Orchestra 2011, Ginásio Ópera Orchestra, Cascais Symphony Orchestra with great conductors such as Jean-Sébastien Béreau (France), Ian Cober (Netherlands), José Rafael Vilaplana (Spain), Cesário Costa (Portugal), Alberto Roque (Portugal), François-Xavier Roth (France), Lawrence Foster (USA), Douglas Bostock (Great Britain), among others.
He was awarded at several Saxophone competitions, and appeared as Soloist with the National Conservatory Music School Wind Orchestra, National Republican Guard Chamber Orchestra, Cascais & Oeiras Chamber Orchestra, Oporto Military Band and with the National Republican Guard Symphonic Band.
He was a teacher at Lisbon National Conservatory Music School (2011/2013) and Jaime Chavinha Music Conservatory in Minde (2010/2013) and gave Masterclasses and Workshops in Figueira da Foz (2013), Coimbra (2013), Santa Comba Dão (2011), Ponta Delgada (2015), Brasília (2017), Palmela (2017), Prague (2010), among others.
He has performed in Portugal, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic, Brazil and Taiwan.
He has collaborated with several composers in the creation and dissemination of a new repertoire with Saxophone, already counting on some dedications. The AiDuo group, which he integrates with the pianist Iryna Brazhnik, premiered some of these works and recorded them on their first album - On the way ... - in 2016.
Artur Mendes started his jazz studies in 2021 with Desidério Lázaro.
In addition to his activity as classical musician, Artur Mendes has collaborated with the most diverse projects such as Fado, Popular Music, Musical Theatre, among others.
