How to Make Your Dream Career a Reality: A Life Coach Tells All
The entertainment industry is a wonderful, magical and incredible world to work in, but let’s be honest, it can be tough at times. And while we all start our careers with big dreams and bright ideas about how we want to live our lives and where we want our talent to take us, sometimes things don’t go quite as we expected. That can be draining and for some it might even lead to giving up on our ambitions…
But we’ve got exactly what you need to get all your energy and enthusiasm back, to replenish that confidence in your dreams and send you sky-rocketing!
We asked a professional life coach, what her one tip would be for entertainers to make their dreams come true, and this is what she said:
‘’I’ve worked with so many people over the years who have a real passion, huge talent and even great ambition – but somehow they just haven’t managed to get to where they want to be. But the exercise I’m about to talk you through is truly amazing at unlocking your inner resources so you can make it happen!’’
‘’So far I’ve seen clients create whole new businesses, transform their personal lives, and achieve their greatest dreams, with this one really very easy exercise….It’s perfect for talented and creative people who want to turn their passion into a successful career.
It’s called ‘Dream to Reality’.
This exercise is best done with a friend if possible, but you can also do it alone. You should also try to do it in one go, take an hour or an hour and a half and just go for it, you won’t regret it!’’
Start by opening up your imagination…
Sit for a moment and just think about what you would like your life to look like in 3 years’ time.
You really need to open up your mind for this. So many of us close doors on ideas and place limitations on our abilities because we don’t believe we can do something.
Get rid of the statement ‘I can’t…’ and replace it with ‘If I could have anything I wanted…’ and then start thinking about these questions. Write down the answers with as much detail as you possibly can…really let your imagination fly…
- Where do you want to be in 3 years’ time? What does it look like/feel like?
- What do you want to be doing? How does it feel to be doing this? Is it exactly what you want to be doing? If not, keep thinking…
- How much money are you making? Think about exactly what you need financially.
- Who do you want to be with? What are they like? How are they with you? What are they doing that makes this time better/happier/more creative/successful for you?…
You now have a picture of exactly what you want your life to look like in 3 years’ time!
It’s time to fast-forward into the future…
Now get up and run around in circles until you get dizzy! Right, now you’ve arrived at an ordinary day in 3 years! You’ve just bumped into your friend in the street (if you’re working alone, you’ll have to just imagine this bit!)…
You’re delighted to bump into each other and they ask you how you are and what you’re doing. Tell them all about your life, where you’re living, how amazing your career is and how much you’re enjoying using all your wonderful talent.
Now get your pen at the ready again, it’s time to talk about how you got there.
Tell them the whole story of how you came to be where you are now, with all your dreams in place:
Start with what you did from January to July this year, starting with today, 3 years’ ago.
How did you start planning? What did you do straight away? Did you do something to brush up some skills, to diversify, to change your act?
How did you get yourself organised? Did you put reminders in your calendar, get a book to write everything down? What tools did you get to help you?
Did you need to do anything financially to get your plans started?
What did you do from July of this year to January next year?
Did you continue with any training? Did you start networking? Did you sign up and get onto the Entertainers Worldwide Directory? Did you read the Entertainers Worldwide blog advice for entertainers to find out how to get great photos, write a fantastic bio or how to get cruise jobs? What had changed by the end of this 6 months?
Keep going through each 6 month chunk like this until you reach January in three years’ time, when your world is exactly how you want it to be.
Your notes are your masterplan…
‘’Wow, those notes you’ve just made are your masterplan for the future and the first step on your path to creating your best life.
Such a simple exercise, but it can be so powerful – take the notes you’ve made, keep working on the details, keep thinking about it and keep planning and I guarantee you’ll transform your life.’’
We’ve all tried this in the Entertainers Worldwide office, and it is amazing! We hope it really motivates you and fills your January with productive and creative energy.
