To assist you in booking Norwegian Based Escape Artist Christian Wedoey for your upcoming event, we recently had a Q&A session with him!
Q. What are the most common events that you perform at?
A. After dinner parties, conferences, product launches and theatres.
Q. How long have you been in the entertainment industry?
A. I have been working in showbiz since 2010, and I have been doing It full time since 2012.
Q. Whereabouts have you played in the country/world?
A. I’ve mostly performed in Europe. Norway, Sweden, Germany, Greece and the UK.
Q. Is your act child-friendly? A. My act can be child friendly. If I’m booked to do a show I usually talk to the client first and we agree on the type of act best suited for their event or party.
Q. Are there any occasions that you would not advise to book you for? A. I prefer working from a stage, so if you are looking for a close-up magician I would recommend someone else.
Q. Are there any occasions that your act is better suited to?
A. My act works best at bigger events with a propper stage, or out door events where we can do some of the bigger escapes.
Q. What’s the biggest crowd you’ve performed to so far?
A. My biggest live audience is arround 18.000, an escape act performed at a football stadium.
Q. What type of occasion/event have you the most experience in performing at?
A. I have done all sorts of different events, but 70% of my shows have been at corporate events or theatres.
Q. Do you have any video links on your profile for a booker to view your act? A. I have a lot of video and promo material on my page.
Q. Do you have over-time charges if the event runs late? A. I charge no aditional fees for delayed events, when I do a show I dedicate that day or days to the client. Many of the big events are delayed by an hour or more and most of them are in the evening so I usually travel home the next day.
Q. What questions would you need to know from a booker? A.What time is the event?
Where is the event
How many people at the event?
How bigger space on stage is dedicated to me?
Are there other acts at the event, if so who and what do they do?
How long in advance will I be able to come in and rig my show?
Are there some people in the audience who you want me to give special attention to?
Are there any disabled people in the audience or someone with special needs I need to know about?
Q. Can you tailor your act to the booker’s requirements?
A. Much of my act can be tailored to the bookers requests.
Q. Do you need any special arrangements in order to perform?
A. On some of my acts I need some special arrangements.
Some of the big illusions are sensitive to angles and some of the escape acts needs special preparation.
Q. What is the average duration of your act?
A. I have different acts depending on the event, but usually I do anywhere from 5 to 60 minutes on stage. For the theatres we sometimes do 80 minutes as well.
Q. Do you have an ideal age-range for your act?
A. Most of my big illusion acts fit all ages. The escapes are better suited for 10-12 years and up.
Q. What was your worst gig and why?
A. My worst gig was at a big corporate event for a big bank In one of my first years as an illusionist. The person who had booked me had quit his job and not Informed the people who were organizing the event that I was doing 8 big illusions on stage and needed the whole stage for the show. He had just said he booked a magician.
So when I came to the event, they had rigged a big band who were to be on after me on the stage. There was no room for the big illusions on the stage. So I ended up improvising 20 minutes of mind reading and comedy magic.
The show went good and the client was happy, but I felt really bad since the event was live on National TV and what I did on stage was something completely different than I had prepared for.
Q. Do you have an interval?
A. I perfer having an interval on my longer shows, but I can perform the show without.
Q. Are you insured for Public Liability?
Q. Do you sell any merchandise?
Q. If you were to cancel on the day due to an emergency, do you provide a back-up?
A. I have performed on stage with fever, broken hand, and concussion. But I have never canceled a show, If I had to cancel to I would do everything I can to provide a back-up.
Q. How long before the event do you typically arrive at the venue?
A. I always make sure I have extra time before my shows. For the small shows I usually come in hours before. For the bigger things we come the day before, or two days if needed.
Q. How far in advance would you advise that the booker book you?
A. I recommend booking at least three months in advance if you want a special escape act. For the normal shows, 2 weeks is enough, but I have a busy schedule. Some clients book a year in advance.
Q. Would there be any fees that the booker is not accounting for?
A. Yes, there are travel fees and a hotel fee if you book my act. By plane for the smaller acts and in Europe I usually travel by car for the bigger shows with illusions.
Q. Do you require help to set up your equipment/set-up?
A. For the smaller acts I set up everything myself. For the big acts, I usually bring 1-3 assistants, at least 1. If we have a good amount of time to prepare I can sometimes use help from the event location.
Q. Do you have a back-up plan if there is a malfunction with the equipment? A. I always bring more equipment then I need in case of unforseen events.
Q. Would you say you have a good rapport with your audience?
A. Yes, that is one of the things I’m getting the most compliments on.
Q. Does your pricing change during popular seasons?
A. No. My acts have a fixed fee. My calendar is full so it’s always a popular season. Christmas season fills up extra early.
