Q&A With James Alan | Cabaret Magician | Toronto – Canada

To assist you in booking James Alan Cabaret Magician – Toronto Canada for your upcoming event, we recently had a Q&A session with him!

Q: Describe your act in 5 words

A. Magic reallyis for grownups.

Q: What kind of outfit will you wear?

A. I’m typically dressed more formally, in a suit and tie.

Q: What sets your act apart from your competition?

A. What sets me apart from my contemporaries is experience. In addition to performing for private events, for over two years I hosted a weekly magic show in Toronto,Magic Tonight, with a wide range of special guests. When you perform for the ticket-buying public, you learn to expect the unexpected. I’ve had to perform for audiences who were younger, older, slightly intoxicated, less slightly intoxicated; performing with equipment malfunctions and during a blackout. Few performers can guarantee a successful performance when the unanticipated arises and the conditions aren’t ideal.

Q: Is there audience interaction in your act?

A. My performances are very interactive. With magic, it’s essential for the audience to be involved in the show and to have the opportunity to see things up close so they can be sure of what they’re seeing. It also produces some truly wonderful lasting memories.

Q: Is your act child-friendly?

A. I’ve earned a reputation showing that “magic reallyis for grownups.” There are lots of very gifted children’s magicians out there and I wanted to do something different. While my show remains family friendly, I make no promises to be interesting to anyone under the age of about fourteen.

Q: What type of occasion/event have you the most experience in performing at?

A. I have the most experience performing for corporate evening events. Typically this is a larger after dinner performance that bridges the evening between the meal and any awards or special presentations.

Q: How long have you been in the entertainment industry?

A. I’ve been performing magic for the past twelve years; and as a full-time professional for five years when I created my first one-man show,Lies, Damn Lies & Magic Tricks.

Q: What is the average duration of your act?

A. Most often, forty-five minutes. I’ve been asked to do shorter segments and individual pieces as part of banquet galas, and as long as two hours in private homes. But forty-five minutes seems to be the ideal length that gives good value for the booker and a strong impact on the audience while leaving time in the evening for awards, dancing and other presentations.

Q: Can you tailor your act to the booker’s requirements?

A. I’m constantly adjusting my act to tailor it to the requirements of individual events. Most often, my show needs to be a particular length to fit in with the event schedule. For corporations, I’ve structured special presentations which feature a product for launch or promotion at a trade show.

Q: How long before the event do you typically arrive at the venue?

A. I typically arrive about thirty to forty-five minutes before the guests do for set-up and sound check. The set-up for my performance is not time consuming, but it’s important that once the show begins everything is effortless and contributes to the feeling of magic.

Q: Are there any other services you provide, such as MC’ing?

A. I can MC events in addition to my performance. In addition, since I’m generally on-site before the guests arrive, I often perform mingling close-up sleight of hand for guests before the meal as an added service.

Q: Do you need any special arrangements in order to perform?

A. My only requirements are that the audience are able to see and hear the show. Additional amenities like lighting cues, music and video projection are possible depending on the conditions for the performance.

Q: Are you insured for Public Liability?

A. I carry public liability insurance and I’m waiting for the day that someone tries to sue me when I find the wrong card.
