A trio of close harmony vocalists specialising in vintage & cabaret style shows.
To assist you in booking London Based Vocal Trio, The Girls from Oz for your upcoming event, we recently had a Q&A session with them!
Q. What are the most common events that you perform at?
A. We only reformed The Girls From Oz about 6 months ago but already we have had a decent amount of gigs! We are largely booked by Australian companies who have branches overseas or on certain celebratory days such as Australia Day, but what has been a pleasant surprise for us is that a lot of British companies have hired us as well and their reaction to the shows are equal to an audience full of Aussies. We often perform at a 1940’s themed bar in London which is very British but they love the vibe we bring and of course the songs are all well known so it’s been great to discover that we appeal to British audiences as well!
Q. How long have you been in the entertainment industry?
A. Individually, each girl has enjoyed dazzling careers in Musicals and Jazz clubs, both Internationally and in London’s West End. Between us we have played roles, such as Mrs. Banks in Mary Poppins, Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show, Eva Peron in Evita, Grace Farrell in Annie, Irene Molloy in Hello, Dolly!, Christmas Eve in Avenue Q, Nancy in Oliver, the list goes on.
Q. On average, how much do you cost to hire? A. Our prices start at just under £600 and depending on how big a band you’d like it can stretch to around £10,000. Obviously, you get what you pay for, so the cheaper options are for a more intimate environment, while if you’re looking for something more spectacular you’d be looking at hiring the whole Big Band to accompany us.
Q. Is there audience interaction in your act? A. It really depends on the event and the audience. We started off as a cabaret act which involves a very strong audience connection but we have also done a few corporate events where we’re more background singers who are adding to the overall ambiance to the event.
Q. What is one of the highlights of your show? A. Well, one of my favourite things about our show is that our arrangements are unique to our group. We have been very lucky to have some of London’s best West End musical directors write arrangements just for us. Also, one of our songs features some percussion that we do ourselves on everyday Australian items which is fun.
Q. What’s your most favourite gig to date and why? A. We were asked to be the featured artists at the Australian Embassy in London for their Anzac Day gala dinner. That was amazing! It’s such a grand building and we felt so honoured to be performing at such a prestigious event. Also, it was full of Aussies who were loving that fact that we were giving them a little piece of home.
Q. Whereabouts have you played in the country/world?
A. We have performed mainly in London but we recently did a gig in Berlin.
Q. Describe your act in 5 words. A. Sassy, Glamorous, Cheeky, Fantastic Harmonies!
Q. What’s the biggest crowd you performed to so far? A. We had an audience of over 900 when we performed at the Australian craft beer festival in London.
Q. Are there any occasions that you would not advise to book you for?
A. I think our act works best when we have an audience who is able to sit and watch us, whether it be over dinner or at a cabaret style venue with tables, unless we have our Big Band with us then it’s great music to dance to!
Q. Do you have any video links on your Profile for a booker to view your act? A. Yes! We have a few different videos. Check them out!
Q. Can you tailor your act to the booker’s requirements?
A. Absolutely! We approach each event differently and the client also has the option of requesting a unique arrangement of a special song, provided there’s plenty of notice.
Q. Do you require any special arrangements in order to perform? A. For overseas gigs we require sound and lighting equipment to be supplied as well as a sound engineer.
Q. What is the average duration of your act?
A. We have 2 x 45 min sets.
Q. What sets your act apart from your competition? A. Most acts perform arrangements that have been done before. All of our arrangements are unique to our group but they are songs that everyone knows! Also, one of our packages involves hiring our pianist which gives people great value for money as it not only adds a ‘live’ sound (as opposed to backing tracks) but our pianist also sings a 4th harmony in a lot of our songs which just adds that extra special something to the show!
Q. Do you require a meal?
A. Yes please! (Does anyone say no to that?)
Q. Would there be any fees that the booker is not accounting for?
A. Only for events that are a considerable distance from London.
Q. What kind of outfit will you wear?
A. We have a range of costumes, all of them Vintage inspired with an Australian twist. We can be very ‘out there’ with our Australian Flag dresses or much more conservative depending on the event. We have 1940s dresses, 1950’s swing dresses, 1950’s sequinned wiggle dresses, elegant green dresses with a yellow wattle flower, etc. Most of our costumes can be seen on our profile page.
