Biography
Verity Guthrie Bio
Originally from Perth, Western Australia, Verity’s immense passion for music and performing arts started at a very young age. At 17 she was accepted into the internationally acclaimed West Australian Academy of Performing Arts as a singer. After 3 years Verity graduated with a Certificate IV in Jazz and a Degree in Contemporary Music.
Verity started performing on stage professionally when she was 16, since then she has sung with a variety of jazz and contemporary cover bands as well as forming her own band, The Red Shoes Band. This band fused together a unique blend of j
... azz and contemporary cover music with original arrangements to well known tunes. Quickly becoming one of Perth’s most in demand bands, in 2004 Verity led the Red Shoes Band overseas. This was the start of numerous hotel residencies playing 6 nights a week in places such as The Grand Sheraton Walker Hill Seoul, The Sheraton Grand Ocean Resort Japan, Le Royal Meridien Resort and Spa Dubai, The Royal Orchard Sheraton Thailand, The G Hotel Malaysia and The Gulf Hotel Bahrain.
In 2008, Verity Decided to base herself in New York City. Here she recorded her first debut album “While We Were Here” collaborating with world renowned musicians and engineers including drummer Fred Alias (Average white band, Cassandra Wilson, David Sanborn) percussionist Daniel Sadownick (JLO, Kylie Minogue) and mixing engineer Roy Hendrickson of Avatar Studios (Roberta Flack, Donald Fagen)
Residing in London from 2009 until 2016 Verity continued as a freelance session musician composing, recording and performing in a variety of line ups all over the country and the continent along side highly accomplished musicians including Robin Banerjee (Former Guitarist for Amy Winehouse), Kim Murray (Guitarist for Bony M)
and percussionist/drummer Cosimo Keita Cadore (played with Shakira, Mariah Carey)
Just a few clients and regular residencies in London were One Aldwych Hotel, Le Royal Meridien Hotel, The Savoy Hotel, Vinopolis-Bar Blue, Smithfields Bar and Grill, BMW, Pal Zaleri and Silver leaf Events.
As well as regular session work Verity’s original projects in London included country/blues band Road Side Saints and also jazz/pop band WhoAreThePeople, who are signed to Belgium record label Rag Time Records.
From 2017 Verity has been back on the road continuing her 5 star hotel residencies. Some of her most recent contracts have included The Grand Hyatt Muscat, Waldorf Astoria Chengdu and The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Hong Kong.
Campbell Hapi BIO
New Zealand born Campbell Hapi started
music lessons when he was 6 years old
beginning with recorder, clarinet and piano. At age 10 Campbells father, being a musician himself purchased him and his brothers an electric guitar, bass guitar and amplifier. From then on “jamming” never ceased in the house as the boys attempted to play along to all their favourite records including Steely Dan, The Eagles, Average White Band and many more. Growing up in the town of Hamilton, New Zealand,
Campbells school life was dominated by performing in numerous school orchestra shows, concerts and theatre productions every year and eventuated with him completing Grade 5 Clarinet at Trinity College, Grade 5
Theory in Music and Grade 8 Piano at Royal Schools of Music.
By 14 Campbell started performing professionally as the bass player for Dixieland combo the ‘Bourbon Street Ramblers’. Performances included Army base socials, televised live charity events and a regular Sunday residency at ‘Uncle Sam’s restaurant”, Hamilton. At age 15 he joined the band ‘Shadylane’ a 3-piece rock/pop covers unit performing at local venues and festivals which included the famous ‘Sweetwaters’ Festival, one of New Zealands largest and most well known musical events.
In 1984 Campbell became the bass player for the band the ‘Politicians’. This was a 50/50 covers/originals outfit that widely toured the North Island of New Zealand playing in various pubs and nightclubs. Eventually this band was a headline act at the acclaimed ‘Suparock ‘85’ concert in the Christchurch, this being the peak of their popular South Island tour.
The band subsequently reconfigured into ‘Tim Armstrong and the Kiwi Band’, which enjoyed a year long 5-night per week residency at ‘Zak's Niteclub’ in Hamilton. By this point Campbell was not only playing bass for them but also guitar and keyboards.
An offer to try life in the ‘big smoke’, Auckland in 1987 and play with ex-“Hello Sailor’ and “Misex” alumni Harry Lyon and Paul Dunningham, could not be refused. This period not only led Campbell to a residency at ‘Casey’s’ in Papatoetoe but also meant performing in several “all-star” shows featuring Dave McCartney, Graham Brazier, Hammond Gamble et al.
Also during this time the keyboard spot in Peter Morgan’s quartet, vacated by legend Ben Gilgen became available and Campbell was welcomed as the new keyboard player, he then played the last few months of their well known gig at ‘Stanley’s’ on Queen street.
After this Campbell continued to follow the work and found himself back in Hamilton, performing with the popular, Peter Matthews band.
Older brother Brett Hapi (bassist) had been in Melbourne Australia for some years and in July 1989 enticed Campbell to cross the Tasman and join his latest ensemble performing shows all over Melbourne. But when the call came months later to board the cruise ship ‘Fairstar’ out of Sydney, Campbell decided to join the quartet ‘Sir Deuce’ as their bass player. This was a top 40 pop, easy listening, cocktail band, backing passenger shows 7 days and nights a week for 1 year.
Having heard of the jazz course at the Sydney Conservatorium, Campbell sent an audition tape and was accepted to major in piano for the class of ‘91. The faculty at that time included world renowned pianists Mike Nock, Roger Frampton, Judy Bailey and Paul Macnamara, all of whom made valuable contributions to Campbell’s education. Here he completed a Diploma in Jazz while also working as one of Sydneys best and sort after session musicians.
In 1993 Campbell then returned to cruise ship the Fairstar as a solo cocktail pianist for 1 year, however then became the Musical Director for main “showroom band” for the next 18 months. This involved running rehearsals, backing cabaret artists, writing charts for brass sections and rhythm section arrangements.
By 1995 it was time to relocate to Sydney again, inheriting the keyboard chair in the weekend house band at ‘North Sydney Bears’ rugby league club as well as many other of Sydneys most prestigious venues. Again Campbell became one of Sydneys most highly professional and popular multi-instrumental session musicians, performing on high profile tours with well known artists such as country vocalist Gina Jeffrey’s and Australian diva Marcia Hines. The breaks between tours enabled time for side projects like Jeff Duff’s ‘Alien Sex Gods’ and Kere Buchanan’s Steely Dan / Toto tribute.
Finally in mid 2000, came the offer from Campbells younger brother (drummer) Kristen Hapi to join ‘Solidaz’, an all New Zealand Band performing long term hotel contracts all over the world. Just a few of these residency’s have included The Shangri-La Hotel Jakata, The Crown Plaza Hotel Shenzhen, Conrad Bangkok Hotel, The Shangri- La Hotel Manila, The MGM Hotel Macau, The Shangri-La Hotel Shanghai, Rock Bottom Cafe Dubai and The Kerry Hotel Shanghai.
Currently based in Bali, Campbell has just completed a 2 year residency at ‘Skygarden’ superclub in Kuta , Bali.
