A power house vocalist paying tribute to the legends while keeping it edgy enough to captivate fans of all ages might be one way to describe Don Woods. The Release of his Nashville Recorded Album 90 Proof gave rise to his single Whiskey Melody bringing nominations for Entertainer of the year and song of the year in the 2015 Nashville Universe Awards. With a review of this album one article stated “Don Woods is influenced by classic country artists like George Jones and/ or Waylon but he is smart enough as an artist to keep this just modern enough to have an update classic sound.
On any given summer day back in the 70’s and 80’s driving down some dusty old back roads of Joshua Texas, one might hear on old transmitter radio playing some great George Jones tunes to the hum of an old tractor and chain saws. Make no mistake the sounds were heard not only through the ears of a young country boy named Don Woods but through the heart as the lyrics spoke to his soul.
It was the days of working his grandpa Hammonds farm listening to that old radio hanging in the tree by that rugged old leather strap that Don developed his love for Country Music from some of the greats s ... uch as the George’s (Jones and Strait ) along with the stage passion of Garth Brooks. It was the greats that would later inspire Don to stay true to Country Music while living his dream.
Don started his musical journey by singing to tracks in reality talent competitions to get just to the next round and be knocked out by a sweet young teenage girl singing a Swift song. Don didn’t let this stop his passion to deliver a great performance any where he was i.e... The guided tour on the Ryman Stage as his hair stood up he knew he just had to sing what was on his heart and yes you guessed it George Jones Grand Tour!! As he finished even the photographer said did you feel that son the greats were all around you up there. After this historical trip to Nashville Don formed a band and began to perform on stages across East Texas and then on to the House of Blues in Dallas Texas. Yes the house of blues you see this proves Don’s theory that music is truly a universal language that speaks to people no matter the era or nationality. Speaking the universal language of music to large audiences was powered by his love of country singers and song writers such as Chris Young, Eric Church,Keith Whitley, and Jason Aldean all of which he soon added to the list of covers he would use on stage.

Though many country music lovers feel that the true country sound is gone simply because of what they are hearing on mainstream radio these days, the truth is that it isn’t gone at all but you just have to dig a little deeper to find it. Texas is one spot to dig for it and you will be amazed at what you find. You will find several artists playing a brand of country music that you will love including Don Woods. With his album 90 Proofhe blends his influences from the classic era with the modern era giving listeners an album that is undeniably country without soun ... ding dated. He perfectly hits on several different tempos throughout the album and balances them all perfectly. “More Than Dallas” or “If It Wasn’t For The Radio” bring a slower pace to the album that allows Woods’ rich vocals to be the center of the song, while the tough rocking country of “Lipstick On a Cigarette” lets the music add the kick. In between you get a healthy offering of classic era influence as is evident by the sound of the steel guitar on “The Grand Tour” and in the great storytelling on “Some Summer” and “The Ride,” both which use their lyrics to paint vivid pictures in our minds as we listen. There is no doubt about that Don Woods is influenced by classic country artists like George Jones and/or Waylon Jennings, but he is smart enough as an artist to keep this just modern enough to have an updated classic sound. Because of this ability, if Don Woods sits in waiting for the current pop/rock trend of country’s mainstream to pass, then he will be right there and ready to take the reins when the opportunity to do so presents itself.
