TIPS & ADVICE ON HIRING A VIOLINIST

Organising a party? Entertaining clients? Putting on a private reception for VIPs? If you want to make a real impact with a virtuoso musician who performs with passion and fire in their belly, a Violinist will bring the wow factor to any event.

WHAT KIND OF EVENTS DO VIOLINIST PERFORM AT?

Violinists are in great demand for occasions where high quality music is required, such as weddings, private concerts, receptions, product launches and VIP events. Whether you hire a contemporary Electric Violin Player or a Traditional Acoustic Violin Player, they will provide great solo entertainment that will dazzle.

As the violin is small, it can be easily moved around at your venue to suit your event's timescale and needs, and because it is such a versatile instrument, you can expect pop hits and classical pieces alike.

Many violinists perform a wide range of music including bluegrass, country, folk, jazz, world music, show tunes, film music, rock and pop. Alternatively you might like to have classical music played with a modern twist. From Beethoven to Beyoncé, you can find a talented Violinist to play your preferred style of music and to cater to your particular event.

Parties

If you require sophisticated background music for a cocktail party or after-dinner entertainment, a violinist can play gentle classical music or jazz favourites, adding a touch of elegance to the occasion and soothing your guests, helping them to relax and socialise.

If you’re planning to pop the question during an quiet dinner, a violin can serenade your partner with beautiful music, creating just the right romantic mood.

Violinists are also excellent as performers at birthday parties. As well as performing ‘Happy Birthday’, you can request sets with pieces from Bach, Beethoven, Vanessa May, Vivaldi, Bollywood and more! It can make a charming backdrop to all the excited conversation in the room.

Because the violin is such a versatile instrument, it is also be a popular choice for funerals which is a wonderful, respectful way to pay tribute to someone who was special to you.

Weddings

Violinists are always a popular choice for weddings. They can be hired to play chosen sections of romantic classical or contemporary pieces for your ceremony, creating a magical and poignant atmosphere for your family and friends to revel in.

After the nuptials have finished, your hired violin player can continue to entertain guests with celebratory music during photos, in between speeches and at your drinks reception. As guests sip on the first celebratory drink of the day, a Violinist can create a beautiful ambience, playing relaxing background music or special arrangements of your favourite pop tunes, whether inside the venue or outside in the open with the (hopefully) sunny weather.

When it comes to your evening reception, it’s time to party. A Violinist can take your wedding entertainment to the next level, playing as a soloist, accompanied by high-quality backing tracks to get the crowd dancing, as part of a duo or a as a collective of Violinists. From the Bond theme tune to string versions of your favourite pop or jazz hits, a string group can add real sparkle to your celebrations.

Corporate Events

One of the great things about hiring a Violinist for your Christmas work party, annual gala dinner or end-of-year company bash, is that they can be the main entertainment on a stage or blend into the background. Alternatively, they can go from table to table performing to small groups of guests.

For real wow factor, you can hire an electric violinist. Not only will the sound be amplified with an electric pickup but electric violins are also visually striking, with colourful or transparent bodies and parts that light up.

Violin music can be a great conversation piece that breaks the ice at a product launch or shop opening. You can hire a Violinist to add excitement and dazzle visitors to your art gallery exhibition or coffee shop.

HOW MUCH WILL A VIOLINIST COST?

Violinists cost £150 to £500 in the UK ($150 to $500 in the U.S. and €170 to €560 in Europe). High-profile performers will usually cost more and prices may be higher at peak times of year, such as bank holidays, Christmas and New Year.

HOW LONG CAN I HIRE A VIOLINIST FOR?

Two or three sets of 30-45 minutes each is standard, with a break of around 20 minutes at least every hour. For events lasting several hours, such as festivals and weddings, you can discuss your requirements with your chosen player, who will be happy to adjust their sets as far as possible.

If you need some background music between sets, don’t forget to mention this to your Violinist, as they will often be able to bring an iPad or laptop to play pre-recorded playlists through the PA system.

HOW MUCH SPACE DOES A VIOLINIST REQUIRE?

The minimum space required for a solo violinist is 8ft x 6ft (2.5m x 2m). Extra space may be needed for music stands, a PA system, microphones, monitors and possibly extra equipment such as loop players and laptops, as well as room around the stage for amplifiers and lighting stands. We recommend checking space requirements with your performer when you book.

WHAT EQUIPMENT DOES A VIOLINIST NEED?

Violinists provide their own instrument along with a music stand, adjustable stool, PA system and microphones if required. Standard PA systems are usually suitable for up to approx. 150 people. If your event is larger than that, you may need to hire a bigger system.

Whatever the venue, large or small, indoors or outdoors, your Musician will need the basics of a flat, dry and suitably-lit area in which to set up and play and a safe supply of electricity, including at least one 13 amp power socket near the stage area, unless they are playing unplugged.

Your musician will also need somewhere private backstage where they can get changed, warm up and relax in between sets, ideally with a mirror. If your venue doesn’t have a dressing room it’s advisable to try to organise an alternative space.
