Mister Meredith - Compere | London(no reviews)
Based In: London
Fees: £250 - £600
Having three different guises, singalong pianist, compère and musical comedian, if variety is the end of the pier, Mister Meredith went and jumped off the end.
For singalong pianist, think of those old pubs that always had someone bashing out favourite tunes that everyone knew. Mister M knows songs for all ages: music hall, pop, musical theatre, and old standards, all wrapped up in a knees-up and a hokey cokey. This is family entertainment that really is for the whole family, or as one reviewer from his 5 star singalong show in Edinburgh said:
'Yes, yes, yes! Honestly Mr Meredith and h ... is organ should be available on the NHS such is the pure, unadulterated, joy that they provide.' (The Girl With the Edinburgh Tattoo)
He regularly plays at Norman's Coach and Horses as recently mentioned by Robert Elms on BBC Radio London, and the historic George Tavern in the East End and corporate clients include Inside Soap Awards, British Guild of Travel Writers and Future Laboratories. With many a wedding under his belt as a soloist, he also performs with vintage wartime duo For The Boys in tandem with Miss Em.
However if you're looking for a compère that's a trifle naughtier than your average host, try this "old school smoothy with dry observational comedy" [The Herald] albeit with a subversive side as evinced by self-penned songs on a wide range of subjects including black and white films, fad diets, theatre luvvies, Doctor Who, bestiality, narcissism, casual sex, masculinity and binge drinking, although other (cleaner!) songs are just wallow in the sheer joy of wordplay.
"Camp", "glitzy", "dandy", "charmer"...all frequently used words in the press that describe this musical comedian with a penchant for lewd songs and loose clothing; qualities that helped him into the finals of Hackney Empire New Act of The Year 2012 and 5 star reviews for his solo shows at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2012 and 2013. The press say:
"A subversive compère who takes pride in getting the City boys a little hot under the collar" The Telegraph
"An amazing compère" Burlesque Bible
"One of the greatest cabaret performers of his generation" Scotsgay
Meredith was trained at Birmingham University in Music, Drama and Dance and worked in all three fields before combining them in the marvelous smorgasbord of cabaret. He started playing singalong piano in nursing homes 20 years ago, when he also began writing his own songs. Over this time he has amassed a vast repertoire but is still willing to learn more - put your requests in now!
To give a flavour of the range, here's a tiny sample: Daisy Bell, Coming Round The Mountain, Rabbit, White Cliffs of Dover, Sweet Caroline, Blue Suede Shoes, Bohemian Rhapsody, I Kissed a Girl, Jerusalem, God Sav ... e The Queen, The Red Flag, Don't Dilly Dally, My Old Man's a Dustman, I Will Survive, There Is a Tavern In The Town, Maybe It's Because I'm a Londoner, Doh a Deer, I'm Getting Married In The Morning, Twenty One Today, Valerie, Delilah...and hundreds more!
He's performed on most major cabaret stages across the capital, but you can now mostly find him at Proud Cabaret as one of their resident compères, However he still finds time to travel to other cities either as an act or compère and is equally at home in large theatres and intimate nightclubs.
Recent London Cabaret appearances include The Chelsea Theatre, Proud Cabaret, Cafe de Paris, Madame Jojo's, RVT and The Bush Theatre,
Other recent cabaret includes hosting Enchanted Burlesque at Birmingham Old Rep and The Velvet Burlesque at Sheffield Library Theatre, Bacchanalia at The Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh and headlining Cabaret Saltaire at The Saltaire Festival.
