How to Learn and Create Solos on Guitar
Hello, and welcome to learning how to solo on guitar. With this article, you will learn most everything you need to know about soloing on the guitar - everything from licks to speed; almost all of it will be here.
When I was trying to learn how to solo on guitar, I always thought it was about trying random combinations until I found something that remotely sounded correct. It took me endless hours to come up with these mediocre sounding licks and solos. Then, I made a new friend who had much more years of experience than me in guitar. He told me the key to making a good solo is to learn scales. I was a little bit skeptical at first because I knew about scales, but thought they were too boring. When I actually learned a scale, however, it opened up amazing possibilities for lick making and solo producing. How to learn some basic scales: (If you already know scales, then skip this part) The first scale you should learn for soloing is the A minor Pentatonic scale. However, you will not need to learn the entire scale to be able to solo. You will only have to learn a section of the scale to be able to start soloing. For the A minor (or Am) Pentatonic scale, the notes for the section that you will want to learn are E string (Fattest one) 5th fret and 8th fret. For the A string, the notes are 5th and 7th frets. For the D string, the notes are 5th and 7th fret. For the G string, the notes are 5th and 7th. For the B string, the notes are 5th and 8th. For the E string (Thinnest one) the notes are 5th and 8th frets. Now that you know the notes, you can play from the low E string to the high E string in order of those frets. Practice picking the notes in alternate picking up and down the little section of the scale. Once you have mastered going up and down and you will not forget these notes, move on to the next part of the guide. Now that you know the section of 12 notes, you can move on. What you will want to do now is play up and down the section some more times, but play some of the notes twice. Also, try skipping at random times, or going back down electric guitar neck, then back up for different effects. One last thing to try is bending. Whenever you learn a new technique on the guitar, apply it to your little section. Eventually, a lick will be created. Now, try learning other scales. If you do not know any other scales or do not want to buy a book about scales, I recommend searching online for some new scales that you would like to learn. There are many interesting and odd scales that you could learn for your soloing. The next thing you should work on is speed. Speed helps learn control and is necessary for certain songs of a quick tempo. Speed is not hard to work on at all. All you have to simply do is to alternate pick the first four frets on each string up then down. Make sure you play each note clearly on tempo. It is best to practice the exercise next to a metronome (a tempo keeper). Learning this exercise and playing it at increasing speeds will increase your speed, which will open your horizons for new genres or fast songs. It will also teach you control, which will help with playing any song with precision. The rest is up to you. Only creativity and practice will take you further from now on. Have fun and enjoy creating your new licks and solos |
