Meet the Act
I started playing Johnny's music by myself nearly 20 years ago while I was working as an actor at a dinner theatre. The theatre cast me in the musical Ring Of Fire because of my love of his music and interest in being in the show. This led to me auditioning for the Broadway National Tour of Million Dollar Quartet and touring with the show for 4 years, doing more than 12 regional productions, and creating my own original tributes concerts to Johnny that I have now performed across the country and Canada. His music has just always spoken to me, and having performed as Johnny for well over a m
... illion people, it is clear that his music speaks to A LOT of people. He was truly the archetype of the American Dream, and a true American icon.
There are Johnny Cash fans all over the world, regardless of language, race, politics, religion, age or gender. His music has spoken to and inspired people for nearly 80 years. He ALWAYS remained true to himself, his upbringing and his faith; he was authentic, and never tried to be anything that he wasn't. His voice is instantly recognizable, his presence commanding, his charisma undeniable. He was never afraid to use his platform to fight for the downtrodden, the forgotten or the underdog. He may have been one of the most important musical, cultural and societal figures of the 20th Century.
I was working at a record store in my home state of Maine in early 2002 when a coworker put on some music in the store that he swore I would like. I asked what it was, and he said "Johnny Cash". I immediately remarked that I didn't like country music. I had certainly heard his hits, but I really knew very little about his life or his music at that point. The album he played that day was American II: Unchained. I left that day after work and purchased that album on CD. And thus began my obsession with his music. I started buying the other American Recordings that were out, and bought American IV as soon as it was released. I started buying his Sun era recordings, then Columbia, then Mercury. I started finding every concert video I could find; reading every book that was out. I saw Walk The Line as soon as it came out, and my obsession and fandom grew to the point that I started learning to play and sing his songs. 20 years later, it is my full time job.
