David Selfe
David Selfe - Pianist / Keyboardist - Norsewood, Manawatu-Wanganui Event Location: Rotorua, New Zealand. 29th September 2025
‘Silent screen, living sound’ Performance at Shambles Theatre, 20 September 2025, reviewed by Shamus Baker Audiences were treated to an invigorating immersion into the past on Saturday 20 September at Shambles Theatre, where pianist David Selfe and percussionist Jeremy Fitzsimons provided an ingenious musical accompaniment to two silent films of the great Charlie Chaplin, A Dog’s Life (1918) and The Pawn Shop (1916). All music was composed by Selfe, and adapted by Fitzsimons for their duo. While this is not the place for a synopsis of either film, both involved Chaplin’s iconic Little Tramp persona in various scenarios of mayhem, trickery and social faux pas, with his eventual triumph occurring against both the odds of ordinary logic and his own relentlessly inventive disdain for normal codes of behaviour – to great comic effect. Both musicians did themselves great credit in a performance situation that stretched concentration and agility to an unusual degree.
