Matjaz Kafol

Biography

Matjaž Kafol was born in Trieste (IT) on the 14th of October 1992. He began learning trombone in 2003 under the guidance of Professor Simon Perčič at the music school in Komen (SLO). In 2013, after years of study with various instructors, he commenced his bachelor's degree in classical trombone at the University of Music in Ljubljana. During his studies under Professor Dušan Kranjc, he participated in numerous masterclasses led by renowned trombone players such as Andrea Bandini, Antonello Mazzucco, Ian Bousfield, Enrique Crespo, Jonas Bylund, Nicola Ferro, Cristian Lindberg, and others. B ... etween 2013 and 2018, he achieved success in several solo and ensemble competitions, leading to performances as a soloist with esteemed orchestras including the Chamber Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, the Slovenian Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, and the Opera Theater Orchestra in Maribor.
From 2016 to 2019, he served as principal trombonist in the Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra in Ljubljana. In addition to his performance engagements, he taught at two music schools and conducted two wind orchestras. Beginning in 2014, he worked as a teaching assistant at various wind band summer schools in Slovenia, providing group lessons and leading section rehearsals. Subsequently, between 2016 and 2020, he offered private and public school students individual trombone lessons, catering to students aged 6 to 17. In the city of Ilirska Bistrica, one of the schools he taught at, he honed his teaching skills and passion for conducting as the leader of the school wind orchestra and the city wind orchestra.
Throughout this period, he collaborated with numerous ensembles, big bands, and orchestras, enhancing his versatility across various musical genres. In 2020, he pursued a second bachelor's degree at Codarts (Rotterdam) under the tutelage of Professor Ilija Reijngoud, specializing in jazz trombone, and is expected to graduate this year.
