A Bit About Me :
The Story So Far...
Hi there :) My name is Paul Bryan and I am a Professional Singer and Entertainer performing to a variety of audiences for the past thirty years. Although I have covered many different styles, Big Band Jazz and Swing are my main passion.
My musical journey began in my childhood when, at nine years old I was selected to sing for my London borough at the Royal Albert Hall. I then learnt to play the guitar in my teens and formed my first band at age nineteen. We weren't brilliant although we weren't quite bad enough for me to give up my musical aspiratio ... ns, and so throughout my twenties I toured with a few cover bands in London and the south of England as both front man and rhythm guitarist/ backing vocalist. I also enjoyed studio work as a session musician and vocalist plus agency work as a solo performer.
In 2004, I ventured overseas to the Costa Del Sol in Spain in search of a warmer climate and to pursue a career as a solo cabaret artiste; and I quickly found my niche as a Jazz/ Big Band singer covering hits of the Swing greats such as Frank Sinatra, Matt Monro and Nat King Cole - all the wonderful music on which I was brought up. Whilst there I also became involved in various projects including a couple of 'harmony' duos and I went on to front a nine-piece Soul/Jazz band, performing at weddings, high-end hotels and televised events such as the Mijas Blues Festival.
Following a somewhat successful stint in the south, and due to it's diminishing live music and cabaret scene, in 2013 I headed north and relocated to Benidorm on the Costa Blanca where I continued to work as a solo artiste. In 2016 I was offered the lucrative position of Musical Director in one of Benidorm's largest cabaret venues where I was already a performer. I gladly accepted the role and I was lucky enough to work alongside some incredibly talented people, including the exceptional Steve Phillips aka drag queen Miss Stella Artois. Stella writes and performs brilliantly clever shows with hilarious costume changes and props, all delivered with excellent vocals and impeccable comedy timing. I didn't realise at the time how important it was for me to work with Stella.
In early 2018, some 14 years after landing on Spanish soil, I decided that it was time for a change. So, armed with a wealth of experience as a seasoned professional entertainer, I returned to the UK with offers of corporate work through agencies with whom I had previously been affiliated. However, after just a short while of being back in Blighty, my musical adventure took an unexpected turn..
I was intrigued by a vacancy I had seen online seeking a "Rat Pack/Swing singer" to perform shows across the UK. Having been my speciality in Spain, I enquired into the ad and a few weeks later, following an audition in London, I was indeed performing shows across the UK; three shows per day in fact, five days per week for eight weeks - in residential elderly and dementia care homes. The very idea of entertaining folk in residential care had never occurred to me yet there I was, with the ethos of taking entertainment to those who may not otherwise have access to it - a very privileged insight into a community so rarely acknowledged and far too often overlooked. I completed the tour during which I received some excellent feedback from staff and residents which encouraged me to set up on my own. I proceeded to write and produce my first shows - "The Kings Of Swing" and "Festive Fun At Christmas". I didn't want to be your run-of-the-mill act, standing there like a cardboard cut-out, blandly belting out song after song. So I taught myself how to use music production software in order to create medleys, introductions and voice-overs and, heavily influenced by Miss Artois, I added costumes and props just like she did with a strong comedic, tongue-in-cheek element which I believed would give my shows a humorous visual and interactive content to blend with the great music. I didn't need a £3000 Elvis jumpsuit, a 60 quid one that was clearly too small would do it! I set about trying to create a winning formula and, six years (with a two-year covid hiatus), several different musical themes and well over a thousand shows later, it seems to have worked. I have also appeared upon recommendation in a few local pubs and clubs although the care sector has been my main focus.
I have absolutely loved working within the care communities. It is always a true privilege to share an environment with some of the loveliest people I could wish to meet, from the sweet residents to the kind-hearted staff who tirelessly give their genuine concern and attention to our golden citizens. The humbling testimonials in the 'Reviews' section display a deep affection and high regard for me that is very mutual.
So What's Next?...
I feel that I am now in an extremely exciting and favourable position career-wise. I have a tremendous amount of experience as an entertainer and I am once again looking to work and perform overseas as a Jazz/ Swing Singer, this time in a Hotel or on a Cruise Ship. I strongly believe that I would be a welcome asset to any company seeking first-class entertainment.
