THE CHICAGO BLUES BROTHERS – BACK TO BLACK TOUR – PLAYHOUSE WHITLEY BAY It’s 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark, and we’re wearing sunglasses. Hit it!…..OK, its 13 miles to Whitley Bay, I’ve just filled up with petrol, I packed in smoking 10 years ago and my shades aren’t that dark – but I am on a mission. Not from God, this time its a mission for Nights out in Newcastle to cover “The Chicago Blues Brothers” at Playhouse Whitley Bay. To say I‘m looking forward to this show would be a massive understatement – I first watched the “Blues Brothers” movie when I was 14 years old, back in the early 80’s when Rubik Cubes were the latest craze. I was totally taken by how cool this “John Landis” musical spectacular was, the amazing car chases, the dark suits and pork pie or fedora hats, the fast and furious humour getting knocked about – but most of all, the soundtrack. The majority of the next school da ...y was spent quoting the many catch-phrases, copying the daft dancing of Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Ackroyd) and singing all the catchy hits from the film – no wonder it went on to have cult status. Rock and roll on, 30 odd years, and the band are back together again with an all new production for 2017 – the “Back in Black” tour promises a 2 hour songfest, including well over 40 hits from the film – lets hope it delivers. Arriving 20 minutes early, we were expecting the Playhouse to be ram packed, unfortunately, due to the heavy presence of the Illinois law enforcement community, tonight’s show at the Palace Hotel Ballroom (aka the Playhouse) isn’t going to be a sell out. Our seats for tonight’s performance were excellent, Row G, seats 7 and 8, approx 7 rows from front of stage – to be honest, it wouldn’t matter were you sat as the Playhouse is really well laid out with good vision from all area’s to the stage. The theatre was just starting to fill up a little with an audience made up mainly by couples, in their 50’s and 60’s, a few small families, one with an 11 year old lad dressed with pork pie hat for the occasion, and several groups of friends out for a good night of singing, dancing and reminiscing. 7.30pm prompt, the loud chatting turned to gentle whispers, as the theatre lights slowly dim. After a few brief seconds the silence shatters, abruptly, with an explosion of brass – sax, trumpet and trombone, all played together in perfect harmony, bring the stage to light and lift tonight’s concert well and truly off the ground. Hitting it running, or dancing, are Jake and Elwood who take over centre stage with their crazy footwork – their first track “Soul Man”, backed up perfectly by the sweet soul sisters, is an instant crowd pleaser and a perfect opener. Bringing up the rear are the 2 guitarists and a drummer who complete the group who are spread evenly across the small stage. The huge full length backdrop, printed with various scenes from the film and cartoon type images of the Palace Hotel, draws you back in time to the concert that never finished. This, along with the minimalistic lighting and the dry ice smoke slowly drifting across the stage, adds to the atmosphere and finishes the set off nicely. Without waiting for applause, they head straight into “Hold on, I’m comin” this time accompanied by the brass trio appearing front of stage – both these tracks get the audience up to speed, singing their hearts out and clapping along in time with the beat. Taking a breather from the energetic dancing, the Blues Brothers introduce themselves and have everyone laughing with their banter – especially while picking on a few audience members who’ve come dressed to impress, mirroring their idols with their Blues Brothers outfits. The billing promises 40+ hits from the film, well, an hour in and it seems like they’ve reached that target already – each one sung with typical “Blues Brothers” style, backed up brilliantly by the band and the fantastic harmonising talents of the 2 female backing vocalists. By 8.30pm they’ve certainly delivered and deserve a much-needed break. Interlude over, and ice creams cleared away, Cab Calloway takes to the stage in his trademark white suit and has a bash at “Minnie the Moocher” and nails it. Following on from this, the very Reverend, “James Brown”, dressed in his preaching finest, makes an appearance and has everyone converted. Most, if not all, of the ecstatic audience are now singing and dancing along to the rhythmic “Sex Machine”. Not letting the Brothers have it all their own way, the female backing singers both attempt solo pieces, yet again the vocals are on point with “Freedom”, by Aretha Franklin, stealing the limelight, a little. Classic, after Blues Brother classic were belted out with style, craziness and finesse, and just when I thought they could go on all night, they finally ran out of songs. Closing the show with a final encore of “Let the good times roll” had the whole audience up on their feet, singing and dancing in the aisles and along the front of stage. A foot stomping 2 hours of infectious fun and some of the best entertainment anyone could ask for, along with a smidgen of classy brass. A brilliant show, well worth a watch, right, where’s my VHS copy of the Blues Brothers – I’m on a mission! The Chicago Blues Brothers - Blues Brothers Tribute Band - Wakefield, Yorkshire and the Humber Event Location: Leas Cliff Halls - Folkestone Event Type: Theatre concert 26th May 2018

On an unusually warm bank holiday weekend the Lees Cliff Hall was not full and I worried that the audience would be hard to wake up, (We are somewhat reserved down South) But from the first note I realised that everything was going to be fine and I spent the next couple of hours in the world of Jake and Elwood. It was great! A really tight band and a two supporting singers who can hit all the notes. The two "brothers" were funny and engaging right down to their flaky American accents. We will return and next time i'll take my hat and dark glasses

Brilliant night at the Brindley last night! Music like it should be played - not the fake stuff of today! Can't beat a bit of blues! I'd only just watched the film again so the night brought it all back to me! And great to meet all the cast in the foyer at the end. Only a couple of acts have done that and it'd be great to see some more do it! Roll on the next tour!

Last night I took my oldest friend of over 30+ years to see The Chicago Blues Brothers: Back in Black Tour at The Hawth in Crawley. The first thing I noticed when I looked at the stage was the banner saying ‘’ Let the Good Times Roll’’ as I continued to scan the auditorium and the audience I realised that we were in for a good night. The atmosphere was electric, people were sat eagerly waiting for the show to start. Some of them dressed in the ‘Blues Brothers’ attire of black suits, shades and trilby hats ready to have a good time. The Blues Brothers film came out originally in 1980; it starred the late John Belushi, Carrie Fisher, Aretha Franklin and Dan Ackroyd and became a legend in its own right. Everybody has a favourite scene or song from the film, so I knew that the cast of the show had big shoes to fill. I was very young when the film came out, but I have fond childhood memories of watching the film with my family and so did my friend, so we had high expectations. ... The show started with The Chicago Blues Brothers Band, who in my humble opinion are a very talented group of musicians. They were followed by the beautiful double act of the Soul Sisters and quickly bouncing on to the stage after them were Chris Hindle (Jake Blues) and Gareth Davey (Elwood Blues). The show started with a fast pace that continued throughout and from the start they had the audience clapping and singing along. They covered some great songs from artists such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Cab Calloway to name but a few. During the first half there was a slight incident in the front row which was managed very impressively by the manager on duty. For less professional performers it may have stopped proceedings or put them off their flow but Chris, Gareth and the band continued to entertain us as if nothing was happening. Hats off to them!! After a short interval they returned and from the get go the second half had a completely different feel to it. It was a party! Everyone was on their feet dancing and singing to probably the most iconic songs that you would connect to the Blues Brothers – Shake Your Tail Feather, Everybody Needs Somebody to Love, Give Me Some Loving etc… I for one spent the whole of the second half on my feet “shaking my tail feather!” For me, particular highlights were firstly their rendition of ‘Stand by your man’ which was great but also very funny and the teaching of the dance moves for ‘Shake Your Tail Feather’ was really fun to join in with and watch others join in too. Cast wise, the horn section which consisted of Johnny, Adrian and Chris were amazing but also great fun to watch as they danced and got involved with the show. Some ‘DAD’ dance moves were in there if I am honest, but they pulled it off. The vocal range of Marcia Campbell when she sang the Aretha Franklin section was stunning to listen to. I mentioned the film a little earlier and one of the things that I love about it, is the character played by Dan Ackroyd (Elwood Blues) he unexpectedly stole the film with his dancing and vocals and I think that Gareth Davey did a great representation of this character. In fact, I think I could even go as far as to say he was an even better Elwood Blues. The Hawth is also a great venue. It is very easy to find, with a massive free car park. Food and drink are reasonably priced, and all the staff are very friendly and helpful. Another great feature is there is no restrictive view anywhere within the auditorium, so you always get a great view of the stage no matter where you are seated. If you want to go and see a show that has an extremely talented band, great vocalists, humour, dancing, feel thoroughly entertained and leave feeling like you have just been to a huge party then look no further than The Chicago Blues Brothers. Overflowing with heart and brimming with soul (man), The Chicago Blues Brothers is a hand-clapping, foot-stomping, hit parade-reeling corker of an evening. Without doubt, you'll want to shake your tail feather. A stunning two hour set of blues, Motown and soul music rocked the stage of the Bristol Hippodrome on Sunday 19 July 2015 when The Chicago Blues Brothers rolled into town. Taking its groovy riffs and vibes of effortless cool from the 1980 movie The Blues Brothers, directed by John Landis and starring comedy actors Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, pork pie hats and shades were the du jour attire for much of the crowd, who were from the outset clearly in a rambunctious, boisterous mood to have a good time.
