Biography
My name is Harold Lee Reid the second , born in Harlem Hospital NYC on April 12th mid morning in the Spring of 1964. After leaving the hospital my parents resided in the South Bronx on Caldwell Ave 160th st at my grandmothers home til I was 1yrs old. Shortly moving to Patterson Projects , 370 E 142nd st and finally a year later to the connected building 300 E 143rd st apt 5B on the opposite side of that building complex. It was the beginning of a lovingly dark but talented journey , for a second oldest child (HLReidJr) in the family of four Kids!
I must say living in the projects
... was quit challenging. Even so , in our neighborhood there was a lot of activities involving sports like basketball and it’s series of tournaments year in and year out . The girls in the hood played double-dutch , jump rope , hop scotch and skelzies , the guys also. Some boys joined neighboring rival gangs with names like the Nine Crew , Casanova’s , Black Spades and the Zulu Nation. Oh yeah , the Five Percenters. Along with all that neighborhood action which wasn’t always bad , there was a cultural art form which told a story for every functioning activity in the late 60’s at these times. Graffiti was one of those art forms along with music and dance. Music was the freedom and expression that propelled us into some of the most joyous though strenuous times we were already encountering before I was born. The Black soul power movement and the Freedom era was at hand. Both of my parents at the time were musicians. My Mom played for the church choir and my Dad played in a band. Harold Lee Reid Senior played every instrument that existed , but his favorite was the Alto – Sax!
When I reached the age of nine , my dad used to play his favorite sax to the sounds of his jazz artist collection in the living room and wanted to show off his skills. So he would call me HLR-Jr to sit-in and listen to him blow and boy my dad could blow. It interested me at the age of 9 to wonder what my dad was feeling when he blew on that Sax to all those records. Well , what ever it was seem to trap me and pull me into the feeling he was experiencing. One day I went a step further! We used to have family birthday parties and when it got too late the parents took their kids home and doubled back to our house for the grown-up part of the party to start. Guess who was loading all the songs for the grown ups to dance to all night at 9yrs old?? Me!!! Lol. My mother soon realized why the songs were so hot back to back due to my strong ear from listening to my dad during his practices. Of course my mother had a hand in my ear as well while playing and directing the choir every Sunday at church. My mom didn’t even scold me when she noticed I was still playing records at 1:45 am , but just told me to go to bed. Now , one day dad went out and bought a Marantz Stereo Reciever , Gerrard Turntable with the automatic drop spindle and a pair of Pioneer Speakers which were popular in the mid 70s. The sound had gotten better in the house , at least for apartment 5B in the projects. I had turned 13yrs old , just like yesterday I never forgot.
One day when my parents weren’t home and my friend Dougie G aka Greg Duggins , an MC who never got a break came over with a 12” single LP called “ Dance to the drummer’s beat” by Herman Kelly and Life. A Break beat Party record. I turned on my dad’s stereo and put one speaker in the window , then placed the record on the turntable turning up the volume to 20 and Doug started rappin to the beat while people passing by were dancing on the sidewalk to our music out the window. I felt like I was the man. That was the beginning of my devotion to collecting break beat records. The next three Lps I brought was “Apache” , “Was a dog a donut” By Cat Stevens and “Put your money where your mouth is”. Man!! We kept playing music even different hits that were popular every week out the window! Kool & The Gang , Funkadelic ,James Brown, the list goes on! After a while some people who knew my window saw me on the street and would say , “ Hey man with the music!? You playing today? I would just laugh. But it felt so good , I felt important to the hood! Little did I know I would soon benefit from all this enthusiasm with music later on in High School.
Soon it was 1978. I was 14yrs old , a freshman in High School (Music & Art) on 135th St on Convent Ave in Harlem. This was a School of very talented students , so I wasn’t alone. It seem like all the Art students were interested in music and had the same Idea’s I had. That first day of class I met my lifetime best friend Stephen Crosland from (53 Nostrand Ave) Marcy Projects in Bedstye Brooklyn New York , an Art student like me. We both quickly got acquainted and shared the same interest in music as Art majors. We would go Break Beat shopping and go to each others homes to practice. Sometimes to other buddies who had equipment and we went there too. Steve introduced me to a friend in his building named Duncan , where we took our records to record our break beats on cassette tapes! We started taking our mixtapes to school. Then word got out to other friends in our circle. They would meet us during lunch period at school to hear our mixtapes. This strategy drew counts of spectators and microphone contenders (Rappers) to Rhyme to the break beats and show their skills. We then recruited four guys to rap with us. MC Jazz Master B , Mr Magic Mike , Busy E and Kabu. I called my self Dj Jazzy Jay and Stephen Crosland was Dj Stevie Steve. We formed a group with the name “The Avengers”. That changed , Then “The Five Borough Crew” from M&A was Born in 1980. We teamed up with other crews and shared gigs until we finally started getting our own gigs in Marcy Projects Community Center , Music & Art High School Cafeteria and Hudson Gill Community Center in lower Manhattan. From 1980 to 1982. We quickly made a name for ourselves
1982 – Our collaboration “The Five Borough Crew” took a tragic Turn to the Lost of my Best and deepest friend Stephen Crosland aka “CREW” or Dj Stevie Steve to the hands of the Five Percenters Gang during Graduation Year @ M&A High School. Our Dj and Mc Days were numbered to Zero! But , MC Jazz Master B aka Johnathon Burkes moved forward Recreating himself to become MC Jaz Or Jaz-O , who help to propel Jay-Z’s career with the help of “Big Daddy Kane”. I had also moved on staying current as Dj Jazzy Jay , from 1980 – 1986 to Dj JLJ (Jazzy L Jay) , then from 1987 – 2001 to now Known as Dj Swa-ga Lee / The Blend SeTTa of “The HiTT PaK Masters Inc , Rough Camp Entertainment……
