Biography
Salvatore Spano – Bio
Salvatore Spano was born in Cagliari, Italy in 1967. Ranging
from lyric-symphonic to jazz, from theater to multimedia arts,
Spano’s experience as a pianist, organist and composer spans
over three decades and has been characterized by his
collaboration with various national and international soloists,
choral groups and orchestras.
As a music student in the mid-1980s, Spano favored playing
the piano and specialized in Jazz, through which he
discovered the most influential repertoires in Jazz history,
including styles such as New Orleans, Swing, Bebop and
Hard
... bop.
Spano earned a Diploma in Organ Studies and Organ
Composition under the mentorship of Maestro Enrico Pasini
at the Cagliari Conservatory of Music, Italy. He then
undertook a two-year specialization with Maestro Jacques Van Oortmerssen at the Sweelinck Conservatorium,
Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Consecutively, Spano began a steady and successful collaboration as organist with
Orchestra and Chorus of the Cagliari Opera House (Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Italy), which continues to this day while
also continuing his Jazz activity, characterized by the formation of several bands including the MIDNITE BLUE
BAND, a combo of 10 elements of which he serves as arranger and musical director. At the same time, he deepened the
study of composition, studying with Maestro Franco Oppo and then earning a second Diploma in Electronic Music
under the guidance of Maestro Francesco Giomi.
During this time, he approached the world of contemporary theater as a pianist, giving life to a series of musical
performances with Mario Faticoni and the company "Il Crogiuolo", playing the role of musical director and arranger.
He later collaborated with other companies such as "Il Teatro di Sardegna" and "I Filodrammatici di Milano", and with
actors and directors such as Carla Chiarelli, Marco Balbi, Francesco Origo, Marco Parodi and Luigi Tontoranelli.
With the turn of the new century, the experience he acquired in various musical fields, in addition to his passion for
Jazz, led him to contributing to the establishment of contemporary jazz musical groups, including Acousmatica and
Melodrum, as well as giving life to other formations in his own name (trio, quartet, quintet and sextet), regularly
performing in concerts and performances in influential Festivals and Reviews.
Over the past 20 years, he has played in many Italian and European locations - including Rome, Turin, Milan, Bologna,
Cagliari, Belluno, Alghero, Aosta, Cremona, Genoa, Sestriere, Bari, Nuoro, Sondrio, Pescara, Amsterdam (NL), Davos
(CH), Munich (DE), Ascona (CH), Saint Raphael (FR), Mendrisio (CH) – collaborating, in various capacities, with
numerous protagonists of the Italian and international music scene including Emanuele Cisi, Max Ionata, Ector Costita,
Daniele Tittarelli, Paolo Recchia, Luca Velotti, Massimo Carboni, Andy Gravish, Francesco Lento, David Boato, Joyce
Yuille, Joy Garrison, Ronnie Jones, Rossella Faa, Mario Biondi, Eloisa Atti, Samantha Iorio, Fabio Mariani, Mick
Taras, Bruno Tommaso, Furio Di Castri, Luciano Milanese, Stefano Senni, Vincenzo Florio, Marco Fratini, Piero Di
Rienzo, Adam Pache, Luca Piana, Vittorio Sicbaldi, Billy Sechi, Carlo Battisti and Lorenzo Tucci and the Jazz
Orchestra of Sardinia.
Since 2009, he began an artistic partnership with actress, dubber and performer Michela Atzeni and with the production
company "Quarantacinque", carrying out various roles as a pianist, composer, and musical director of live shows and
music for audio books for both adults and children.
His experience in the recording studio was achieved through six CDs as band leader and a dozen as sideman, as well as
various collaborations as composer, artistic producer, musical director and consultant in published recordings of other
artists.
Throughout his professional activity as a musician, Spano has always managed to advance his knowledge of music by
conducting research in the musical and extra-musical fields, giving particular importance to the expressive themes of
the 20th century, and always seeking to overcome traditional stylistic barriers. His independent studies inspired him to
pursue a master's degree in Conducting Contemporary Ensembles in 2003 in Lugano, Switzerland, and then a second
master's degree in Jazz Music Disciplines in 2014 in Turin, Italy. After the culmination of his academic studies, Spano
has then turned to teaching, collaborating with the Nuoro Music Institute as a teacher of piano and keyboards, ensemble
music, composition and improvisation at the Nuoro Jazz International Seminars.
Since 2024 he has been working with RWS Global (New York City, USA) as a pianist for major cruise ship companies.
