Biography

Simon Zauels is a German musician who has made a name for himself as a bassist, composer, and performer. Born in 1990, Zauels began playing the cello at the age of six and took lessons for ten years before switching to the electric bass. After attending the Landesmusikgymnasium Montabaur, he developed an interest in jazz and pursued studies at the Hochschule für Musik Saar, Popakademie and Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim, where he completed his jazz master´s degree in 2021.
Throughout his studies, Zauels had the privilege of learning from some of the most accomplishe ... d bass teachers in Germany and the United States, including Marius Goldhammer, Stefan Scheib, Dave King, Philipp Rehm, Bernhard Meyer, and Kai Eckhardt. With Eckhardt's guidance, Zauels was granted the opportunity to study at the prestigious Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, California.
Zauels continued to pursue his passion for music, playing in a variety of bands with different styles. He has performed and toured internationally in countries such as Uzbekistan, Taiwan and all over Europe and has played at the prestigious Elbphilharmonie with the Pulse Project, which earned him an invitation from UNESCO. Besides that he is part of Venerem, an ensemble that "reinvents" early music.
In addition, he has performed several times with the Orchestra of the Saarland State Theater, at the Jazz Rally Düsseldorf, at the "Jazzopen" Stuttgart and at the North Sea Jazz Festival.
His works on cruiseships have taken him all over Asia, Scandinavia as well as around the British Isles.
In 2019, Zauels founded his own band, Sameka, and began composing original music. The band's debut album was released in 2021 and was a finalist in the Future Sounds contest hosted by Leverkusener Jazztage.
In March 2023, Sameka embarked on a Taiwan tour, playing eight concerts from north to south, including a workshop concert at Fu Jen University in Taipei.
In December 2022, Zauels was featured in a four-page interview in the German bass magazine Bass Professor.

Simon brings a wide range of talents and skills to his job as House Band bassist. He always arrived early and prepared for our rehearsals and performances. He has a thorough knowledge of jazz bass line construction and plays with a nice time feel. I was particulary impressed with his work in small group jazz settings where he demonstrated proper adherence to styles and genres while still invoking his own creativity. In guest entertainer shows he was true to the intent of the music. Simon was a pleasure to have in my band and I hope to see him again in the future.

Simon's first contract as HB Bassist has been a very successful one. He has all the necessary skills for this job. He has very good time, feel, knowledge of styles, sightreading and jazz soloing abilities. He is organized and keeps all of his music updated in his book and/or tablet. I encourage him to keep absorbing the safety information as he continues to do more contracts. It has been a pleasure to have him onboard and hope to work with him in the future!

Die Musik hat Dampf, das Zusammenspiel der Musiker ist sehr präzise, was durch gemeinsame Linien und Akzente deutlich herausgestellt wird. Unüberhörbar gibt es einen orientalischen Einfluss, der durch besondere Tonleitern mit ungewöhnlichen Stufen entsteht.

Meet the Act

My name is Simon Zauels and I started playing the cello at the age of 6.
After ten years of cello lessons I switched to the electric bass. Since then I am deeply in love with that
instrument. I lead my own jazz-rock band named SAMEKA where we mostly play my own compositions.
Since I grew up with classical music I am still showing big interest in it and try to adapt in on electric bass.

SAMEKA is a young and exciting jazz-rock band from Germany that was founded in 2019. Led by their bass player, Simon Zauels, Sameka's music is characterized by an interesting combination of electric and acoustic instruments that create a unique and captivating sound. In 2022, Sameka released their debut album "Introducing Sameka" on Mons Records. The album features the Syrian oud player Hesham Hamra, adding an extra layer of depth and texture to the already rich and complex sound of the band.
