Biography

Simthandile Mtolo is an award-winning South African vocalist, performer and live entertainment specialist whose career has developed across music, theatre, television, production and international hospitality.
Her professional journey began while she was still at school, when she was cast in the musical Oliver, directed by the late Themi Venturas and staged at Durban’s Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. What followed was a career built as much on the stage as behind it, with Simthandile establishing herself as a jazz and soul vocalist while simultaneously developing and producing original live en ... tertainment concepts through her company, Ebonygypsy.
In 2015, she won East Coast Radio’s Be The Band competition, earning the opportunity to open BP Durban Day alongside some of South Africa’s leading artists, including Mafikizolo, Thandiswa Mazwai and Prime Circle. Her television career has included presenting SABC2’s Hosanna, commercial work, and appearances on some of South Africa’s biggest talent platforms, where her distinctive stage presence, versatility and ability to connect with an audience became defining features of her work.
Alongside her commercial career, Simthandile has continued creating her own work. Productions including Township Jazz Society, A Woman, A Hat, A Bag and Her Belly and It Grows have allowed her to combine music with theatre, storytelling, visual art and other creative disciplines, reflecting a career that has never been limited to simply performing songs.
Her career later expanded internationally, particularly across Southeast Asia. In Thailand she established herself within the luxury hospitality and live entertainment market, including an extended residency at The Nai Harn Phuket, while also producing multidisciplinary South African showcases involving musicians, dancers, visual artists and fashion creatives.
With more than two decades of stage experience, Simthandile today brings together the different threads of that journey: an accomplished vocalist, an instinctive entertainer and an experienced creative producer. Whether performing intimately as a soloist or fronting a full ensemble, her work is grounded in musicianship, personality, audience connection and an understanding that exceptional live entertainment is ultimately about creating a memorable experience.
